The 2009 Western Province Surfing Championships were held at Muizenberg on the weekend of 5 and 6 December 2009.
After being postponed for three weekends due to flat conditions, the W P Champs finally got into the water in contestable light onshore 2-3 ft waves. Saturday started with a leftover wind swell after a week of South Easterlies, followed by an east swell that pushed into the bay from Saturday afternoon into Sunday that provided consistently rideable conditions.
All age groups up to and including the under 18 divisions were completed on the Saturday and the remaining divisions, including the premier Open division, on the Sunday.Standards were high with a number radical moves being executed as surfers tried to stake their claims to the various titles that were up for grabs. At the end of the day there could only be one winner in each division who can claim to be THE 2009 Western Province Champion.
The Open Ladies final was contested by a group of up and coming young surfers who have been knocking on the door for a few years and this year they staked their claim. National team member Tanika Hoffman went one better than her second in the U18 final to clinch the title, beating off U16 winner Sabrina Scott who was followed by Kerri Hodgkinson and Amy Bosworth.
It was also an historic occasion with three of the four Open Men finalists having come up through the development ranks over the years, a credit to the efforts of the various Western Province Committees who had the foresight and energy to initiate and enable these development initiatives and to the funding assistance provided by Lotto.
The winner, Josh Salie, took advantage of his local knowledge to beat an on fire Davie Brand into second with Michael February third and Craig Johnson fourth.
The surfers would like to thank the Contest Director Chris Dunt and Head Judge Grant Arendse and his team of judges who officiated over the two days, a difficult task with wind, glare, freesurfers and sometimes three riders up at once.
