Western Province Surfing

The 2009 Western Province Surfing Championships were held at Muizenberg on the weekend of 5 and 6 December 2009.

After being postponed for three weekends due to flat conditions, the W P Champs finally got into the water in contestable light onshore 2-3 ft waves. Saturday started with a leftover wind swell after a week of South Easterlies, followed by an east swell that pushed into the bay from Saturday afternoon into Sunday that provided consistently rideable conditions.

Sunday 13 September saw the 3rd and final Insight Masters Trial or "Masters Shootout" take place for those competing for the final spots for the 2009 Insight WP Masters Surfing Team.
 
Witsands ala Barclays Bank provided the venue and turned on for a couple of hours with some clean 2-3 foot waves that produced some highly entertaining and competitive surfing with all surfers going for broke, sometimes too literally! Despite the biscuit dodging, doggy door barrels and friendly drop ins the Masters dominated the occasionally crowded line up giving the young crowd plenty of entertainment easily disproving the "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" saying.
