Western Province Surfing provides all our members with equal opportunities to participate in surfing transformation programmes and projects.
We strive to develop them by enhancing their abilities to excel in surfing and to develop positive character traits, with a strong positive focus on creating enthusiasm to reach the highest level possible, within an atmosphere of camaraderie, fun and friendship.
Our Mission is:
- To serve all surfers, officials and administrators of the region in respect of all their surfing needs.
- To create opportunities for participation and involvement in surfing competitions at all levels and spanning all cultures and genders.
- To promote and become involved in community and outreach programmes.
We aim to provide a platform for the development of all surfers, officials and administrators, from entry level to elite, with the opportunity to participate in surfing activities ranging from informal and social contests for fun and enjoyment, to highly competitive contests where skills are tested against the best in the province and the country.
Western Province Surfing is committed, through performances in and out of the water, to the hosting of provincial trials, national and international events and development programmes, and to positively marketing Western Province Surfing through the media in all parts of the region as well as at national level.
We are further committed to creating awareness and attracting involvement by providing both regular activities as well as information on our programmes and achievements to all our members and stakeholders.
Equal opportunities will always be created for participation in any activity presented by Western Province Surfing, in programmes and competitions which will be re-structured to redress imbalances reflecting the profile of surfers, officials and administrators and their needs.
WPS accepts that it has a responsibility to be open in all decision making and in the processes applied. WPS respects and operates within the transparent structures created to involve all role players, both internally within the surfing movement and within the community in which we operate.
Transformation as an exercise encompasses all aspects of surfing within the province and as such does not only address issues of colour, but also strives to transform the sport in all aspects. This will include more professional management of the association, better understanding and participation by parents and families within the sport, as well as the introduction of more participants at entry level with a view to providing platforms and programmes to allow participants with talent and commitment to achieve their highest aims, be they elite international, local competitive or social participants.
In other words, as stated in the WP Business plan, “To achieve the goals of transformation of the sport of Surfing within Western Province at all levels, we will need to address aspects of the sport from entry to elite, involving contestants, administrators, parents and newcomers".
